Open-water race pace is usually a bit slower than your pool pace — sighting, chop, drafting and a wetsuit all change things. Add a little buffer when planning a triathlon swim split.

How swim pace works

Swim pace is measured per 100 (meters or yards). Your total time is simply your distance ÷ 100 × your per-100 pace. The triathlon swim distances:

RaceSwim distance
Ironman (140.6)3.8 km / 2.4 mi
70.3 (Half)1.9 km / 1.2 mi
Olympic1.5 km
Sprint750 m

Note that 100 yards is shorter than 100 meters (1 m ≈ 1.094 yd), so a given /100yd pace is faster than the same number /100m. This tool shows both.

Pool pace ≠ race pace — open water adds time. Plan with a buffer.

Frequently asked questions

What's a good Ironman swim pace?

Many age-groupers swim the 3.8 km around 1:45–2:15 per 100m, finishing in roughly 1:07–1:25. Set your pace above to see your projected split.

How do I convert /100yd to /100m?

A /100m pace is about 9% slower than the same number /100yd (because 100m is longer). This calculator shows your pace in both automatically.
