Triathlon wetsuit temperature rules (2026)

Whether you can — or must — wear a wetsuit is set by the water temperature, not the air. Ironman and World Triathlon / USAT use almost the same thresholds for age-group athletes:

Water temperatureWetsuit status (age-group)
Below 60.8°F / 16°CMandatory — wetsuit required
60.8–76.1°F / 16–24.5°CLegal — wetsuit allowed
76.2–83.8°F / 24.6–28.8°COptional, non-wetsuit — you may wear one but forfeit awards, rankings & qualifying slots
Above 83.8°F / 28.8°CProhibited — swim may be shortened or canceled

Pros & elites face a stricter cap: wetsuits are only legal up to about 71.6°F / 21.9°C (for races over 1,500 m / 3,000 m). If you're racing for a podium or a Kona/Worlds slot, use the pro toggle above.

Cold water has its own limits too — many races set a minimum swim temperature (often around 51.8–53.6°F / 11–12°C) below which the swim is shortened or canceled for safety, and may cap exposure time. Always defer to your event's official athlete guide and the race-morning announcement.

Thresholds reflect 2026 Ironman and World Triathlon / USA Triathlon rules; individual races may vary.

Frequently asked questions

At what temperature is a triathlon wetsuit legal?

For age-group athletes a wetsuit is legal in water up to 76.1°F (24.5°C), and required below 60.8°F (16°C). Between 76.2°F and 83.8°F you may still wear one, but you'll be classed non-wetsuit and give up awards and qualifying. Above 83.8°F (28.8°C) wetsuits are banned and the swim itself may be cut.

Why can't I wear a wetsuit in warm water?

A wetsuit adds buoyancy and warmth. In warm water that warmth becomes an overheating risk, so above ~76°F it's restricted and above ~84°F prohibited. The same buoyancy is why a wetsuit is a real speed advantage in legal conditions.

Do pros follow the same wetsuit rules?

No — the elite/pro cutoff is lower, about 71.6°F (21.9°C). Above that, professionals must swim without a wetsuit even though age-groupers still can.

Is it the water or the air temperature that counts?

The water temperature, measured by race officials on the morning of the event, generally at multiple points around the swim course.
